Nikolai Vasilevich Gogol was born in 1809 in the Ukraine. His comedy about a penniless clerk from Moscow who is mistaken for a government inspector by the corrupt officials of a small town in Tsarist Russia was first staged in 1836. It was widely taken as a satire on the corruption of Russian officialdom. Introduction by Edward Braun.
