It is the rule in Iraq - five and twenty five. First, five meters: Stay in the vehicle; scan the dirt around your tires. A device hidden inside five meters will cut through armour and kill everyone in the truck. And then, twenty-five: Dismount and sweep twenty-five meters in every direction. A device within this larger zone will kill anyone on the road ahead. It is the early months of the Arab Spring, 2011. But for three young men, two American and one Iraqi, their minds return again and again to 2006, to the bloodiest stretch of the Iraq War, when they were members of the same platoon tasked with the dangerous work of repairing potholes on the roads of Al Anbar Province. They have survived the war, but now they must learn how to live with themselves.
